Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vining Funeral Home - Safford on Nov. 13, 2025.
John Garza, age 52, of Tempe, Arizona, passed away on Friday, November 7, 2025, after a brave battle with glioblastoma cancer.
Born in Morenci, Arizona, John was a dedicated community servant and beloved family man. A proud graduate of Tempe High School, John served his community as a firefighter for 20 years with the Tempe Fire Department. He was also a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, exemplifying courage and commitment throughout his life. Those who knew John often remarked on his quick wit and welcoming smile. His tremendous sense of humor and big personality brought joy to every gathering. Whether at the grocery store, the gym, or any outdoor activity, John had a unique ability to make friends wherever he went. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and camper who loved spending time outdoors. Golfing and cooking for his loved ones were two of his greatest passions.
John is survived by: his wife, Liana Garza; their two children, John Jr. and Maya; and his constant companion, his dog Pepe. He is also survived by: his parents, Robert and Nora Garza; and his sister, Elizabeth Pollock (Garza), along with her children, PJ and Brooke Pollock. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. John will be deeply missed, and his absence will be felt for many years to come.
From azfamily.com: The Tempe Fire Medical Rescue Department is mourning after the loss of one of its paramedics. Paramedic John Garza died Friday morning due to an ongoing battle with cancer. He was a 20-year veteran of the department. In his role as a paramedic, Garza helped thousands of people with medical emergencies, saving countless lives, officials said. He served as a captain, an engineer and more. Garza was also a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps.
"Firefighters risk themselves to provide lifesaving services to our community every day," Tempe Mayor Corey Woods said in a written statement. "On behalf of the entire City of Tempe, I would like to express sincere condolences to Fire Paramedic John Garza's family, and thank them for the service he provided."
"Just over 20 years ago, I had the honor of going through the recruit academy with John while serving as the recruit training officer for Tempe. From the very first day, I was drawn to him - that big laugh, his quick wit, and the way he could instantly make you feel like you'd known him for years. John had this special warmth about him that you don't come across often. He had a genuine kindness that made people feel seen and appreciated," said Tempe interim chief deputy city manager Greg Ruiz. "Over the years, whenever I'd run into John, it was like no time had passed - the same smile, the same laugh, the same big-hearted energy. He had a way of lifting everyone around him, and the world feels a little dimmer without him in it. I feel truly lucky to have known him, and I'll always remember the joy and friendship he brought to everyone he met."
"The loss of Firefighter Paramedic Garza is felt deeply throughout our department and community. John was the kind of person whose smile could light up a room. His sense of humor made even the toughest days a little easier. He always put others first and embodying the very best of what it means to be a public servant. His commitment to Tempe was a calling, and he answered it with courage, compassion, and humility," said Tempe interim fire chief Darrell Duty. He added, "John and I shared a bond as proud graduates of Tempe High School, forever Buffaloes at heart. We often talked about those days, laughing over memories and reflecting on how far we'd come. He was not only a great firefighter, but a great friend. John was someone who lifted others up and led by example. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the spirit he brought to every call, every conversation, and every moment in service."
