Passed away on October 31, 2025 at the age of 88. He was predeceased by his parents, George and Alice Giess; and his brother, Robert Giess. He is survived by his wife, Lois; daughter, Tina (Pete) Smiley; sons, Jay (Shela) and Russell (Kathleen) Giess; grandsons, Adam (Andrea), Christian, Kevin, Jordan, John, Dean and Carson, granddaughter, Jane (Jack) and great-granddaughter, Margo.
Raised in Philadelphia, John attended Germantown Friends School and obtained his bachelors degrees in English and Mechanical Engineering in 1961, and his MBA in 1964 from the University of Rochester. He married Lois in 1962. He worked for RG&E as the Director of Gas Supply until 1994. After early retirement from RG&E he became a realtor and then broker of his own firm, Madison and Paul, which focused on land sales and building cabins. He then owned and operated property along the Main Street in Prattsburgh, NY.
John loved music and sang in church choirs for 70 years, and was an active member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Rochester. John cherished his family and greatly enjoyed following the pursuits of his grandchildren. He also liked to cheer on his favorite sports teams: the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles, plus the Buffalo Bills.
Friends may call to the funeral chapel (2305 Monroe Avenue) December 5th from 4-7 pm. A Funeral Service will be held at 11 am on December 6th St. Thomas Episcopal Church (2000 Highland Ave.)
