John P. Gruccio, PhD., 89, of Vineland passed away peacefully on October 21, 2022 at Eagleview Rehabilitation Center in Pittsgrove just seven days shy of his 90th birthday. He was the son of the late Nunzio and Evelyn Gruccio. John was a graduate of Vineland High School Class of 1950 where he was on the Varsity Track and Cross Country teams.
After high school, he entered the military where he served with the US Navy as a Hospital Corpsman for 26 months in Korea from 1951 until 1954 and was honorably discharged. After the war he went back to school and graduated from Glassboro State College in 1961 with a BA in Elementary Education; in 1965 with an MA degree in Elementary Principal & Supervisor and again in 1973 with an MA in Secondary Principal & Supervisor. While at Glassboro he participated in the Varsity Cross Country team, Intramural basketball and baseball.
John worked as a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools, and worked as Director of Education at Leesburg State Prison and was also a Adjunct Professor in Law & Justice at Glassboro State College.
John was a member of the Reliance Fire Company and the City of Vineland Fire Department since 1957 and he was also a charter member with Co # 1. He worked for the Vineland Office of Emergency Management where he was voted member of the year in 2007. John was recognized for his 45 years of service to the Vineland Fire Department - Office of Emergency Services by the City of Vineland, Cumberland County Board of Commissioners, the Legislature of the State of New Jersey and the House of Representatives. He was also a trustee of the Vineland Historical Society.
He is survived by several loving cousins.
A funeral home visitation will be held on Friday, October 28, 2022 from 10am to 11am followed by a funeral service at 11am from Rone Funeral Service, 1110 East Chestnut Avenue, Vineland. Interment will follow in Cumberland County Veterans Cemetery, Bridgeton.
