John Hagy Obituary

John William Hagy, III
June 26, 1939 - March 11, 2026
John William Hagy, III, passed away peacefully, and surrounded by family, on March 11, 2026, in Boerne, Texas. John was a friend to everyone he met throughout his entire life, and he will be incredibly missed.
John was born on June 26, 1939, at the Nix Hospital in downtown San Antonio, Texas, the first of four children, to his parents John William Hagy, Jr. and Marjorie Marcroft Franklin. John grew up as a child during World War II, the Korean War and the Cold War. He graduated in 1957 from Northeast High School, (now MacArthur High School).
After high school, John was a fulltime undergraduate student at Trinity University while also working in the blueprint library at Howard Aero, founded by Dee Howard, at San Antonio Municipal Airport. While in his junior year at Trinity, John met freshman student, Karen Ann Weinburger, of South Lyon, Michigan, and they were married in 1961. John graduated from Trinity, earning a bachelor's degree in business.
John and Karen were married for 32 years, and raised three children, Marjorie, John IV, and
Miriam, and lived in northeast San Antonio before moving to the country outside of Boerne in December of 1974. The family went on many vacations together to places such as Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico, in addition to Karen's home state of Michigan.
Upon graduating from college, John was employed by the Texas Employment Commission, and after two years began working for General Adjustment Bureau where his career as an insurance adjuster began in 1963. After that, John worked for other companies as an adjuster, including Floyd West Insurance Company, USAA and Barron & Co. Adjusters, all in the great city of San Antonio meeting many lifelong friends along the way. In the mid-1980s, John began working as a staff investigator for the Law Office of Hardberger & Rodriguez, and was by this time, a very seasoned and knowledgeable man of his talents and craft. John was a phenomenal and thorough investigator and asset to the law firm, having worked on numerous cases of a wide variety, turning up valuable facts and evidence. In 1991, John started his own private investigative company and named it South Texas Investigations, employing his son, John IV, as his original business colleague. John went on to run South Texas Investigations until his retirement, investigating cases for numerous companies, firms and individuals, including Hardberger and Rodriguez, and later, the Law Office of Fidel Rodriguez. Also, during his working years, John owned a tobacco store in Boerne and named it Tobacco Road. At the store he sold pipes, tobacco and cigars and enjoyed engaging in interesting conversation with everyone that walked in the door. The store was later moved to Seguin, Texas and renamed The Dutch Tobacco Company.
John enjoyed a wonderful life and loved his family and friends. He was an avid reader with a vast library of books, and an expert in ancient, biblical, American and world history, astronomy, and extraterrestrial activity, in addition to a variety of other subjects too numerous to name. He was also a great writer and highly articulate orator, with quite the keen sense of humor. He was a fine woodworker and enjoyed creating wonderful crafts and treasures with his hands. A
lover of nature and the deep woods, one of John's favorite fictional characters was Grizzly Adams, and he often imagined his own life as the same.
John was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Boerne, and his love and faith in Jesus Christ was exemplified in his love, devotion and discipleship to others. John never knew a stranger and would make friends with everybody he met throughout his life.
At age 54, John married Patty Stutler in Boerne, Tx and became stepdad to her three daughters, Sandy, Shari and Stacy. John knew their family well as both families were members at St. Mark Presbyterian Church since 1975. John and Patty spent 32 happy years together in their Hill Country home, working in their workshop creating one-of-a-kind crosses that they sold as part of their Christian ministry and enjoying many trips to the Gila Wilderness. The two families created numerous happy memories over the years that will never be forgotten. John is survived by his wife of 32 years, Patty Hagy, his children Marjorie Hagy, John Wm. Hagy
IV, Miriam Hernandez and husband John, his stepchildren Sandy Stutler and husband Grover Brown, Shari Garza and husband Arthur, Stacy Carroll and husband Danny, 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren.
John was preceded in death by his parents, John Wm. Hagy Jr and Marjorie Hagy, siblings Tommy Hagy, Anne Schiller and Robert Hagy.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at 10:00am, at Messiah Lutheran Church at 9401 Dietz Elkhorn Rd. Boerne, TX 78015, with a reception immediately following.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the National Park Foundation @ give.nationalparks.org to honor John's love of nature.
