John Payton Hamby III
June 5, 1985 - August 25, 2024
John was preceded in death by his Grandparents John and Grace Hamby; Grandparents James and Nancy Myers; Uncle Danny Myers; Cousins Timmy Denny and Amber Elbarassi.
He leaves behind his parents John and Laura Hamby; aunt Mindy (Kris) Myers-Ridge; uncle Rusty (Keasha) Myers; aunt Amy (Brad) Ficklin; aunt Pat (Bob - deceased) Chestoskey; aunt Gina (Gerald - deceased) Moerke; great aunts, uncles and cousins too numerous to count. All of them he loved dearly. John was an only child but cherished his cousin Schyler Cunningham, loving each other as siblings, as well as his friends and colleagues at IUPUI.
John was a passionate poet and writer. With a quick wit that filled you with laughter. For John there was never enough time in his world to read all the books he wanted to consume with insatiable desire.
After graduating from Center Grove High School, John continued his education at IUPUI, receiving degrees in: Associate of Arts in English; Bachelor of Arts in English; Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and a Master of Arts in Sociology. He was also a member of United Chapters of Alpha Kappa Delta International Sociology Honor Society.
John worked at IUPUI as a Teaching and Research Assistant. John's hopes were to use his education to help those in society who needed it most. His compassion, kindness and non-judgmental heart has been taken from all of us.
Funeral services will be held at Oakley-Hammond Funeral Home, 5342 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46219 Friday, September 6, 2024 with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m. with a service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will take place following the services at Washington Park East Cemetery, 10612 E. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46229.

I remember John as a great kid with aid back appearance and easy going personality. He had that awesome Tom Petty long blonde hair, he wore wonderful rock band shirts apparel like the grateful dead. He was an easy going kid who you could easily chat with and attend school along in the bus or in the hallways on a daily basis. During the school summer breaks, he was a amongst other great childhood kids from the area you could enjoy your day along. He had good head on his shoulders and very smart . He was a spitting image of his two wonderful parents and our familied thoughts and condolences are with his .

I want to share how much I cared for John. During my time working at Garfield Park, he visited often, and we would have deep, meaningful conversations. His smile could light up a room, and he was always kind and respectful. I will miss him dearly.
