John David Hammett

John David Hammett, a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at home on November 20, 2025. Born on November 8, 1960, in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the youngest of twelve children born to Dick and Sara Hammett. He spent his formative years in Leonardtown, Maryland, surrounded by the large, close-knit family that helped shape the man he became.

After graduating from high school, David entered the United States Navy in 1978. He was stationed in Diego Garcia, a remote British Indian Ocean Territory, where he supported the Seabees in the construction of the U.S. Naval Communications Station. Following his tour of duty, he continued to serve in the Naval Reserve and eventually returned home to Leonardtown.

David had a lifelong passion for music and cars. After leaving active service, he began working at Bussler's Auto and Service, later becoming the top mechanic for Drive-Line Inc. Known for his remarkable skill, David could simply listen to a car and diagnose its problem. His expertise-and his generous willingness to help-meant family and friends often asked, "Can you fix my car?"

While at Drive-Line, David and his friend Bob became the mechanics behind "Hot Tuna," a race car envied by many. His knowledge of welding and engines led several racing teams to try to recruit him, but David chose instead to move to South Carolina to be closer to his children. There, he worked for Pinnacle Construction and Directional Boring, Inc., a contractor specializing in underground utility construction. For 14 years, he served as their top mechanic, keeping the company's heavy equipment running with the same skill and dedication he brought to every part of his life.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Sara Hammett, and his brother Jim. He leaves behind his wife, Julie; his sons John Michael, Matthew David, and Shawn Kasey (and his wife Lacey); his daughter Kristen Michelle; and twelve beloved grandchildren. He also leaves his golden retriever, Zoey.
