John William Hanby, 79, of Pearland, Texas, passed away peacefully July 3, 2025.
John was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and grew up in Spring Branch, Texas. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy, where he was stationed in San Diego aboard the USS Bexar beginning on July 26, 1965. After completing his active duty, he continued serving in the Naval Reserve until 1971. For his service, John was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with Device. Following his military service, John began a long and dedicated career with the Houston Metropolitan Transit Authority, from which he eventually retired.
John had a deep love for the outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, camping, and most outdoor activities, and was rarely seen without a crossword puzzle nearby. A lifelong learner and history enthusiast, he authored Jefferson Warriors: A History of Company C, 19th Alabama Regiment in honor of the unit's 1986 reunion. His work is preserved in the Ambrose Doss Papers at the University of Alabama Special Collections.
John was known for his great sense of humor, unwavering dedication to his family, and deep love for his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Julie Simpson Hanby; his son Joseph Hanby and daughter-in-law Mardy; and two beloved grandchildren, Liam (7) and Camille (5).
He is preceded in death by his parents, William Hanby and Mary Hyde; his sister, Mary Jean Hanby Olsen; and his children, Shawn Hanby and Michelle Hanby.
John's memory will be forever cherished by those who knew and loved him.
A visitation will held at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Crowder Funeral Home, 2422 East Broadway St. Pearland, TX 77581, with a service to follow at 10:00 A.M.
