John P. Hanges

John P. Hanges, age 96, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 13, 2025. Born on November 9, 1928, in Wakefield, Michigan, John was the son of John E. and Mary (Russo) Hanges. In 1945, he began his lifelong career in the railroad industry, working in the track department. He spent the majority of his working years with the Chicago and Northwestern Company, retiring in 1986 after more than four decades of dedicated service. On April 28, 1956, John married Myrna Ahonen in Ironwood, Michigan. They shared a wonderful life together until her passing on April 22, 1999. For many years, John and Myrna cherished their time spent at their winter home in Fort Myers, Florida. An avid tennis player, John enjoyed the camaraderie of the sport and formed many lasting friendships through it. He was also a devoted sports fan, especially passionate about hockey and tennis. John proudly served his country in the United States Army from November 1950 to November 1952. A man of strong faith, he was a longtime and active member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Iron Mountain. He was preceded in death by his wife, Myrna; his brother, Sam (Georgia) Hanges of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; his sister, Frances (Carmen) Granato of Wakefield, MI; his nephew, James Granato; and his niece Mary (Richard) Harju. John is survived by his nieces and nephews: Jean Hanges, Carol Hanges, John Andrew Hanges, John (Debra) Granato, Rick (Patty) Granato, Carmen (Michelle) Granato, Suzanne (Paul) Kivi, and Lisa (Bryan) Hewitt; as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews. He is also survived by his special friend Pearl Zucchero of Toronto, Canada The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Optalis Rehabilitation in Kingsford, Michigan, as well as to his friends Mitch and Marchell Merkel, George Wescott, and the Chen family for their kindness, care, and companionship.
