John Crawford Haymaker passed away in his home in Arlington, VA on May 30th, 2025 at the age of 77.

John was born in New Orleans, LA on March 1, 1948 to William and Martha (Timberlake) Haymaker. The family relocated to Atlanta, GA shortly thereafter, where he was raised.

From 1968-1970, John served as an army medic in the Vietnam War, where he was awarded a Purple Heart medal. He enjoyed sailing and tarpon fishing as a young man, and won the Sharpshooter award for his platoon while in basic training. In 2011, he wrote a personal memoir for his family detailing his experiences overseas.

Upon returning home, John earned a Ph.D. in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Georgia. He found deep purpose in his career, specializing in psychometrics, working for many years in the private sector and then for a decade at the US Department of Labor until retiring in 2019.

John is survived by four loving children: Michael, Neil, Jeffrey (Emma Johnson), and Julie (Christopher Williams), two grandchildren: Clyde and Riley, and his brother Gideon Haymaker. John wished for a private memorial, and for his ashes to be scattered near those of his late son, Matthew.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in John's name to the ACLU Freedom Defense Fund, as this aligned with his values and work with the Department of Labor investigating hiring discrimination and wrongful termination.
