John J. Hellesen, a cherished father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away at 11:34 am on Wednesday, September 24, 2025, in Memorial Hospital. Born on April 22, 1952, in Castro Valley, California, John's life was a testament to his resilience, kindness, and unwavering dedication to his family and career.
John's early years were spent in the sunny climes of Castro Valley, where he was born to the late James and Jacqueline (Cardinal) Hellesen, Jr. In 1965, the family moved to Arlington Heights, Illinois, where John would begin his illustrious working career. Eventually, he returned to his beloved California, settling in Hayward before making his way to Elkhart, Indiana. In his travels, John found his calling in hospital administration, contributing his expertise to institutions such as Elkhart General and the Veterans Administration in California.
Throughout his life, John was a beacon of joy and humor, often found on the golf course or entertaining friends and family with his stand-up comedy routines. His love for music was profound, resonating through the melodies he cherished and shared with those around him. His love for the arts was paralleled by his love for the natural world. An accomplished landscape and nature photographer, John authored and published a book that captured the beauty of his travels and the moments he immortalized through his lens. John's laughter and the stories he told will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
John leaves behind a legacy of love and commitment, as seen in the lives of his beloved children, Carly Arnold and James (Ingrid) Hellesen. His joy was multiplied through his grandchildren, William Arnold, Henry Arnold, John Arnold, Marigny Arnold, Jacqueline Arnold, Ottilie Arnold, and Maiah Hellesen, with one more on the way, each of whom brought immense happiness and pride to his life.
He is also survived by his devoted brothers, Joe (Susan) Hellesen and Edward (Kathy) Hellesen, who will continue to honor his memory through the values and lessons he imparted. John was predeceased by his parents, his sister Ann Hellesen, and his ex-wife, Pam (Dahlberg) Hellesen, with whom he shared many life experiences.
John's departure leaves a void in the hearts of those who loved him, but his spirit will forever be a guiding light in their lives. As per his wishes, there will be no services at this time. Palmer Funeral Home - West Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
