JOHN LEWIS HERTEL 1950 - 2025

John Lewis Hertel, 75, of Augusta, Georgia, died at his home in Aiken, South Carolina of natural causes on June 21, 2025.

John was born June 6, 1950, in Norman, Oklahoma to the late Donald Leroy and Elizabeth "Jean" Lewis Hertel of Augusta, Georgia. John married the late Beverly "Bevi" Gwin Hertel Kennard of Pass Christian, Mississippi in 1975 and is survived by his daughter, Rain Hertel Mayeux (Kevin) of Port Allen, Louisiana and 3 grandchildren: Breck Mayeux Smith, Brenyn Mayeux and Weston Mayeux. He is also survived by his sister, Marla D. Hertel Friedmann (Danny) of Augusta, Georgia and his brother, Donald L. Hertel (Joan) of Diamondhead, Mississippi.

John graduated from Pass Christian High School in Pass Christian, Mississippi in 1968, and attended the University of Southern Mississippi. He was artistic and creative, loved history, especially of the American Civil War and had a passion for cooking and travel. He lived for many years in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, traveling throughout Mexico and the American southwest collecting and selling arts, crafts and articles of historic interest. In later years, he worked throughout the central and eastern United States as a long-haul tractor-trailer driver.

A private memorial service will be held by the family in Louisiana at a date TBD.
