John Joseph Hickey of Leesburg, VA passed away on July 28, 2025 at age 81. At his death, John was surrounded by clergy and friends. John was born May 5, 1944 in Marlboro, MA. John graduated from Keith Academy in Lowell, MA where he played on the Varsity basketball team. He then graduated from The University of Notre Dame in 1966. John was a member of the Irish Guard that is part of the Notre Dame Marching Band. In addition to rousing the fans at football games, in 1964 the band performed at the Polo Grounds and the World's Fair in New York at the Vatican pavilion. After graduation John served in the Army Reserves Medical Group. His finance career began in 1966 when he introduced Master Charge in it's infancy to New England before the card was rebranded to the current Master Card. He later served as Finance Director for Zayre Corporation. He then served as VP of Finance at John Wanamaker in Philadelphia and later at Woodwood & Lothrop in Washington D.C. When John was two years old he contracted pneumonia and was near death. He was prescribed penicillin (a wonder drug at the time only recently mass produced) and that saved his life. Family and friends would say that John lit up the room when he entered. John had a wonderful personality and a good sense of humor that attracted all who met him. John was a devoted member of the Church of the Holy Spirit in Leesburg, VA. whose members were a constant support for John. He leaves his wife of 40 years Carol Hickey of Virginia as well as siblings, Thomas, and James Hickey and Anne LoPresti of MA, Daniel Hickey of FLA and Mary Lavallee (deceased) formerly of NH. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Church of the Holy Spirit, 908 Trailview Blvd SE Suite 200, Leesburg, VA 20175.
