John Hill Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 2, 2025.
Surrounded by family, John Maxwell Hill passed from his earthly home to heaven on September 6, 2025. He was born on November 25, 1944, in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to Joseph and Sarah Hill.
Those who knew Johnny will remember his kind and peaceful presence, whose warmth put others at ease. His sly sense of humor surfaced at just the right moments, and he never once complained, even in difficult times.
At a young age, Johnny was drawn to golf. His calm, steady temperament and natural talent made golf a perfect fit and a game he would enjoy his whole life. He and Myra also enjoyed many years of tennis together. The true Southern gentleman, he graduated from Wofford College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. It was during this time that he met Myra Hodges, a freshman at Converse College, and they married in 1968.
In the early 1970s, Johnny joined the family business, H.L. Hodges & Co. Sporting Goods in Greenville, North Carolina, and later spending 25 years with Reebok. After retirement, he loved working at the Greenville Country Club Pro Shop where he stayed connected to his golf buddies and his love of the sport.
Along with golf, Johnny had a gift for cooking. He instinctively knew what spices would enhance any dish, and whether making his famous baked brie, cooking for Myra's tennis team parties, or catering her book club party, he found joy in creating meals for his family and friends that made them happy.
Johnny is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Myra Hodges Hill; his children, Hannah Hodges Hill, Tyler Hill Ford (Vaughn), and John Grainger Hill (Anabel); and five grandchildren: Henry Hodges and John Charles Tubaugh, Gray and Maxwell Young, and Myra-Maxwell Hill. He is also loved and remembered by many beloved nieces and nephews, as well as the family's rescue dog, Sadie, who rarely left his side. Through the years, Johnny also shared a special bond with his sister's children William Carrington Jr., Sarah Hillary, and Coleman Marks Edmunds. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Jo Ann Hill Edmunds and brother-in-law William Carrington Edmunds.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude and high praise to Gentiva Hospice for their exceptional care and support.
Johnny's easy smile and gentle way will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
At this time the family wishes to postpone the visitation and celebration of life to honor Johnny at another time. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. We are so thankful for the abundance of love, support, and understanding.
