John Baxter Hipps, 93, of Canton, North Carolina, went home to be with the Lord on February 16, 2026, surrounded by his loving family after a long and courageous battle with an illness. Born on August 16, 1932, in Jackson County, North Carolina, John was the son of the late Reverend Lovell Hilliard Hipps and Nannie Mae Nations Hipps. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim Hipps, Paul Hipps, and Lenoir Hipps, and his sisters, Lois Elliott and Lena Fitzgerald.
John proudly served his country in the United States Air Force for four years as an aircraft mechanic. Following his military service, he dedicated 30 years of hard work to Champion International, also known as “Little Champion.” He worked as a rewinder operator and was respected for his strong work ethic and commitment which then followed him as he later worked with Wells Funeral Home for 16 years as a Funeral Service Assistant, continuing his lifelong commitment to serving others with compassion and dignity.
A faithful member of Canton Wesleyan Church, John served as a pulpit supply chairman and Sunday school teacher, faithfully supporting his church community. “John lived his faith.”
John loved watching his favorite sports teams and spending time with those he loved most. He will be remembered for his quiet strength, dedication to family, and unwavering faith.
John is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Judy Ann Bonham Hipps; his daughter, Angela Hipps; his sister, Ardith Brown; his brother, Lonnie Hipps (Carolyn); and his grandson, Justin Hipps. He also leaves behind many extended family members and friends who will cherish his memory.
A visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Sunday at Wells Funeral Home in Canton. The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. in the Canton Chapel with Reverend Amanda Fowler officiating.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported them during this time.
The care of John Hipps has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton and an online memorial register is available at "Obituaries" at www.wellsfuneralhome.com.
