John Theodore "Ted" Hockstad
CHOCOLAY TOWNSHIP, MI - John, aka Ted, T-Bear, "The Axe Man," Teddy, Tedward, Mr. Ted, passed peacefully at Trillium House in Marquette the morning of January 23, 2024. Ted was born in
Milwaukee, WI on January 9, 1961. However, he was a true U.P. native, growing up in Marquette County and graduating from Marquette Senior High School in 1979 – "Go Redmen!"
Ted was a "jack of all trades, master of so many things." "Mr. Ted" was Marquette Area Public Schools (MAPS) most beloved and favorite custodian and lunch supervisor to all his kiddos that touched his heart. Outside of MAPS he was the lead baker at Togo's in the '80s, '90s, '00s, '22 and '23, including being the custodian and
handyman at the Longyear, the Medical Center, and detailer and mechanic at several dealerships in Marquette and Green Bay. Not to mention, "keeping it in the family" from bagging, stocking, and managing at both Jack's and Mike's grocery stores from Harvey to Marquette.
Teddy loved music and writing, as well as being an avid fan of hockey and football, which made him smile and be frustrated at times. To be sure, he loved his Chicago Blackhawks, Green Bay Packers, and Detroit Lions. Like father like son, he was the "Grill Master," as well as a natural born musician writing lyrics, singing, running sound and lights for his friends and band mates. To many, he was a friend, son, uncle, cousin, brother, and grandparent, but most importantly, he was a father.
" If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real,
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.
And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more,
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before "
From The Dash by Linda Ellis
His passing is proceeded by his father John Edward Hockstad and his mother Lois JoAnne Tunteri-Hockstad, as well as grandparents John and Louise Hockstad, Theodore Tunteri and Dorothy Tunteri-Silas, and Donald Silas, as well as beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
His passing is survived by his daughters Sarah Elizabeth Clark and Abigail Lynn Benton (Wyatt Benton), grandchildren Nolan, Lydia, Mason, Scout, sisters Dorothy Louise Harlos (Jeff Harlos) and Jolene Louise Miller, and stepmother Marjorie Ann Hockstad, as well as beloved nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
