John Floy Housman, a man of courage and strength, passed away on August 25, 2025, at the age of 70 in Temple, Texas, after a valiant battle with cancer. Born on October 28, 1954, in Washington State, John's journey was one marked by determination, and courage.
John's athletic talent became evident during his high school years as a standout football player for the Killeen Kangaroos. His prowess on the field earned him a full four-year scholarship to the University of Houston, where he continued to shatter records as a Houston Cougar. His remarkable abilities caught the attention of the professional league, and he went on to play for the Houston Oilers until the NFL expansion.
After his storied football career, John transitioned to a new field, applying the same dedication and work ethic to his career in the oil industry. He became as skilled with an engineering helmet as he had been with a football helmet, ultimately retiring after his illness.
John loved God unwavering, and knew that His accepting Jesus Christ as His personal Savior was the most important achievement of his life.
An avid outdoorsman, John loved to hunt and play golf. Even when he could no longer participate in these activities, his passion for sports never waned, and he found joy in watching golf and other sports on TV, cheering on his favorite athletes with the same fervor he once brought to the field.
Above all, John cherished his family. He is survived by his loving daughter, Haley Newton of Alabama; his son, John Austin Housman of Georgia; and his stepson, Adam Dehart of Georgia, his sisters, Kristye Hinds and her husband, Jeffrey and Diane Schultz and her husband, Richard, all of Temple, and many cherished nieces and nephews. He loved hearing about all of the games of the younger generation around him, and was very proud of all of them. His is also survived by many cherished family members and friends.
Memorial Services for John will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, September 4, 2025 at Trinity Church in Temple with Pastor Bryan Allen officiating.
John's legacy is one of triumphs and challenges met with a smile and a joke, always lightening the burdens of others. His intelligence was matched by his wit, and his courage was complemented by his strength . John Floy Housman will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As we say goodbye to John, we celebrate a life well-lived, a race well-run, and a rest well-earned. His spirit will continue to guide and uplift us, as we hold tight to the memories that he has gifted us. John's journey on earth has concluded, but his story will be told for generations to come, a testament to a life of courage and strength, especially in the end of his life.
