John Hrivnak Obituary

Published by Legacy on Sep. 30, 2025.
John M. Hrivnak, Jr., age 85, of Zelienople, passed away on Friday, September 26, 2025, while under the wonderful care of the Passavant Retirement Community Dementia Unit Staff.

Born on July 19, 1940, in Tarentum, he was the son of the late John M. and Susan (Seckar) Hrivnak.

John was a 1958 graduate of Tarentum High School. He went on to attend Thiel College, where he earned a Bachelors Degree in Psychology, and met his wife, Kay, singing in the Thiel College Choir. He had a successful career in sales and retired from Fixtures Furniture, where he won many awards. John served for six years in the Pennsylvania National Guard but was never called into active duty.

He was a member of Dutilh United Methodist Church, and previously Harmony-Zelienople Global Methodist Church. John was very active in the Church and led many Men's Ministries, was a certified Lay Minister, participated in the Promise Keepers Ministry, sang in the choir and taught Sunday School. He also did mission work in the USA, Kenya, Tanzania, Mexico City, and Paraguay.

John was the Football Kicking Coach at Seneca Valley High School where he loved coaching Michael & Tim. He also coached many other young men, including several from Pine Richland High School and other high schools as far away as Altoona & State College, PA. John was an avid Steelers fan and often their performance set the tone for his week. He enjoyed traveling, the company of his dogs, camping, hiking at Moraine State Park, and sitting by the ocean or Lake Erie. He was a fun, outgoing, gregarious, and a jovial man who never met a stranger. Above all, he deeply loved his wife, his three children, and his eight grandchildren.

John leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 60 years, Elaine Kay (Wood) Hrivnak; his children, Michael Hrivnak (Chrissy), Elaine Dwyer (Scott), and Timothy Hrivnak (Amy); his grandchildren, Maren and John Hrivnak, Liza, Joshua, and Jacob Dwyer, and Issac, Anna, and Nathan Hrivnak; his sister, Eleanor Kakuk; brother-in-law, Don Miller; many nieces and nephews; and an abundance of friends.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sister, Sylvia Miller.

Family and friends are invited to attend a reception and visitation from 9:30-10:45 A.M. on Saturday, October 18, 2025, followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 11:00 A.M. All will take place at Dutilh United Methodist Church, 1270 Dutilh Rd., Cranberry Twp., PA 16066.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to Joy in the Harvest, P.O. Box 496, Lansing, IL 60438, www.joyintheharvest.com.
