WATERTOWN- John Thomas Hunkins, 67, died on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.
A Graveside service will be held with Military Honors on Thursday, July 31, 2025, at 1:00 pm in Hillside Cemetery, West Carthage, NY. Per his wishes, he will be scattered in the Gulf of Mexico.
He was born on December 15, 1957, to the late Robert A. and Mary Louise (Chisamore) Hunkins. After graduating from Sandy Creek High School in 1976, he proudly enlisted in the United States Army in 1983. He served honorably for 20 years as a Heavy Equipment operator before retiring. Following his military service, he dedicated 13 years to working for Jefferson County, where he assisted the road crew.
He is survived by his siblings, Gary Hunkins, of Eagle Bay; his sisters Susan (Al) Hayford, Jr., Fairfield, VT; and Karen (William) “Bill” LaRock, of Richland, NY; his stepmother, Sandra Tabor of Cooperstown, his step-siblings, Robert "Bud" (Robin) Tabor and Carol (Robbie) McGovern. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.
He truly enjoyed traveling across the country in his truck, meticulously documenting every detail of his trips. He had a deep love for his motorcycle and also found great joy in the winters, snowmobiling.
John is predeceased by his mother, Mary Lou Hunkins, who died in 2003, and his father, Robert A. Hunkins, who just passed on July 10, 2025.
In place of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in memory of his mother, Mary Lou Hunkins.
