John Jacob Hertle Jr., affectionately known as “Jack,” passed away peacefully on October 16, 2025, in Kingston, NY, at the age of 81.
Born on March 3, 1944, in Jamaica, Queens, Jack was the son of the late John J. Hertle Sr. and Rosemary Broschart. He was a graduate of John Adams High School in Queens. Jack dedicated over 40 years of service to the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), ultimately serving as a foreman and working extensively in asbestos abatement. He concluded his distinguished career in Grahamsville.
Jack was predeceased by his beloved wife, Barbara Young Hertle, with whom he shared many cherished years.
He is survived by his three children: Annmarie (Brian) Huffman of Kerhonkson, John (Barbara) Hertle III of Kingston, and Michael (Laura) Hertle, also of Kingston. He is also survived by his wife of the past 10 years, Katherine Irwin.
Jack was a proud grandfather to Nicole Cooke, Chauncey Cooke, Andrew Huffman, Brittany (Michael) Brocco, John IV (Taylor) Hertle, and Aislinn Hertle; and a great-grandfather to Julani, Jaeliana, and Aliana Clark; Bryce and Kyler Brocco; John (JJ) Hertle V; and Thomas, Rearick, Robert, Chloe, and Lilith Cooke.
He is also survived by his brothers, Larry (Carol) Hertle of Texas and Bob (Melanie) Hertle of Napanoch, along with many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins.
Jack will be remembered for his love of casinos, old cars, NASCAR, and jigsaw puzzles. A skilled mechanic and body repairman, he spent many years working at his family’s business, Jack’s Service Station in Napanoch, where he developed a reputation for being able to fix anything with a motor.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Ten Broeck Nursing Facility in Lake Katrine and the 4 Spellman team at WMCHealth in Kingston for their care and compassion.
