Michael Joseph Leddy, II
September 2, 1939 – June 23, 2025
Michael Joseph Leddy, II resident of Long Island, NY and former resident of Hopewell Junction, NY, passed away peacefully on June 23, 2025 at the age of 85.
Michael was born in Brooklyn, NY on September 2, 1939 to Michael J. Leddy, Sr. and Mary (Lennon) Leddy, both Irish immigrants, and grew up in South Ozone Park, Queens NY.
He attended John Adams High School where he played football. Michael achieved his Bachelor of Science degree from St. John's University and, later in life, his Master's Degree in Special Education from Lehman College.
He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps and was briefly an officer in the NYPD. Michael then became a Firefighter First Grade in the FDNY and, for over 37 years, protected the City of NY as a member of Ladder 35 and Ladder 24 (Manhattan), Ladder 51 (Bronx) and was a founding member of Engine 66/Ladder 61 in Co-op City, the Bronx, the house he retired from in 1999, where he was the Chauffeur on the truck. Michael took it upon himself to design patches, t-shirts and memorial plaques for this beloved firehouse with some still adorning the walls of it today. He also drove for the Battalion and Division Chiefs.
Though retired at the time, Michael proudly joined his brotherhood as a 9/11 first responder and aided in the search and recovery efforts at the World Trade Center.
Michael was also a regular substitute teacher in special education specifically for children with autism and behavioral issues at schools in the Bronx, including Astor Services. He was wonderful with children. During his lifetime, he held many other jobs as well including as both stock clerk and reporter at the NYSE, chauffeur, carpenter, electrician, roofer and, as a very young man, the delivery boy for the local pharmacy in Queens.
Michael led a long life of service to others. He was an EMT and volunteer for the East Fishkill Rescue Squad for many years in Hopewell Junction, NY. He volunteered for the Special Olympics, the American Red Cross and was a member of the FDNY DART (Disaster Assistance Response Team), a group of retired firefighters who deployed all over the country to help those affected by natural and man-made disasters.
He was, for years, a communicant of St. Denis/St. Columba Parish in Hopewell Junction, NY where he contributed much time and service to the parish. He was the founder of the parish's St. Vincent de Paul Society as well as both the founder and president of the Holy Name Society. Michael proudly ran various fundraising and social events for the Holy Name including its famous annual St. Patrick's Day Dinner Dance in the school hall and Holy Name vs. Knights of Columbus and CYO charitable basketball game. He had a knack for rallying people around for good. He also helped safeguard the visits to the parish by two Cardinals of the Archdiocese of NY – Terence Cardinal Cooke and John Cardinal O'Connor. Michael would also happily transport the Dominican sisters of the parish down to their motherhouse in Blauvelt when they asked in his little sky-blue VW bug!
He was a Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, and while a very vocal and proud Irishman, he was somehow also a member of the Joe DiMaggio Sons of Italy Lodge in Hopewell Junction, NY. Michael proudly coached his son's Town of East Fishkill youth soccer team and served as a volunteer sports trainer for John Jay High School's football team, on which his son played the position of defensive lineman.
Michael has two children with his former wife Mary Ann (Murphy) Leddy of Hopewell Junction, NY; a son Dr. Michael Joseph Leddy, III (wife Andree) of Alexandria, Louisiana and a daughter, Shannon Mary Leddy of Hopewell Junction. He has two granddaughters, Anna Clare Leddy and Mary Caitlin Leddy, both of Alexandria, LA.
He is survived as well by his brothers, John Francis Leddy of Massapequa, NY and Gerard K. Leddy of San Francisco, CA. In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by his older brothers Thomas (sister-in-law Mary) Leddy, and James (sister-in-law Eileen) Leddy, as well as Raymond Leddy. He was predeceased by older sisters Mary/Mae (brother-in-law George) Armstrong, Eileen Dudwick, Bernadette (brother-in-law Jack) Sidebotham, and Betty Leddy.
Michael is also survived by his brothers-in-law Henry Mohrmann and Ken Dudwick, and sisters-in-law Maureen Murphy and Deborah Perrone. Michael has many, many nieces and nephews, amongst them five Godchildren, and was very beautifully cared for in the past few years by his niece, Mary Leddy Dunphy, who he called his "angel". He was the neighbor that sat in front of the house and kept an eye on things and had many friends and brothers from all aspects of his life.
Michael was an extraordinary servant to people he knew and those he did not know, always offering a helping hand. He was very brave, full of life and there will never be anyone like him. Slainte, Dad.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Ignatius Martyr Church, 721 West Broadway, Long Beach, NY at 11:00 am on Friday, July 18, 2025. Family and friends are invited to gather at Christopher T. Jordan Funeral Home, 302 Long Beach Road, Island Park, NY prior to the Mass, to pay respects between 9:00-10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made in Michael's memory to The New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation (https://www.nyffburncenter.com/Donate.aspx), or the FDNY Fire Family Transport Foundation (https://www.firefamilytransport.org/donate.html).

'Til we meet again, dear cousin Mike. You lived your life in full and inspired many. You were the first to reach out when I got my assignment to 15 Engine. Your heart was huge and your sense of humor huger (though probably not a word, it sounds pretty good, don't you think?) And, to this day, I maintain you delivered the greatest one liner ever - at brother Jimmy's wake a few years back. I will attend on the 18th to celebrate you're wit, wisdom and concern for your fellow firemen ...and I shall be prepared to share that one liner with one and all...even those not of Irish decent. -Love Cousin Mike Lennon
