John James Viviano, 81, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2021, in Iowa City, Iowa. Services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines, Iowa. Burial will follow at Jordan Cemetery, West Des Moines, Iowa.
John was born December 7, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Bert and Flora (Paffi) Viviano. He married Virginia Langdon Viviano on June 27, 1998. John served as a teacher, assistant principal and principal in the Des Moines Public Schools for over 40 years, retiring in 2003.
John attended Chicago Vocational High School, earned his undergraduate degree at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky and masters and specialists degrees from Drake University in Des Moines. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. His favorite pastimes included spending time with his family (especially his grandchildren) and was an avid angler, fishing from Minnesota to Texas. John enjoyed University of Iowa and Drake University athletics, as well as following the Chicago Bears. He also enjoyed watching Western films and was a John Wayne aficionado.
John is survived by his wife, Virginia Viviano, four sons, Jeffery (Tambralynn) Viviano of Peosta, Iowa, Jamie (Heather) Viviano of Lake Forest Park, Washington, James (Jenny) Langdon of Iowa City, Iowa, and Lee (Jenna) Langdon of North Las Vegas, Nevada as well as daughter, Laura (Joe) Grisamore of Park Rapids, Minnesota; nine grandchildren (Joshua, Sophia, Grace and Pearl Viviano; Josephine, William, Annalynn, Lowen and Emmilia Langdon) and one great granddaughter (Everley Viviano); brother, Robert (Ann) Viviano of St. John, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his parents Bert and Flora.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:00 PM on Saturday, December 11, 2021, at Westover Funeral Home. Contributions may be made to Hope Ministries or the Iowa Lions Eye Bank.
