John “Johnny” Robert Stallings, Jr, 78 of Smithfield passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2023 at his residence. He was the son of the late John Robert Stallings, Sr. and Sara Boykins Edwards Stallings. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Sherri Lyn Stallings Woodyard.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years Brenda Lynn Gwaltney Stallings; daughter, Cynthia S. Edwards (Chris); son in law, Curtis Woodyard; grandchildren, Connor, Colin, Amber and Austin; brother, Michael R. Stallings (Carolyn); and many nieces and nephews.
Johnny graduated from Smithfield High School in 1963, and from Virginia Tech in 1968 with a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. He retired from Newport News Shipbuilding after 40 years of service. He was a Life Member of the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department where he had served in many positions including Asst. Chief. He was a life long member of Trinity United Methodist Church, a member of the Ivy Hill Cemetery Board, the Isle of Wight Ruritan Club and also volunteered with Christian Outreach. He loved the outdoors, hunting, and working on his John Deere tractors.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, August 23, 2023, 11 a.m. at Little’s Funeral Home, Smithfield with burial to follow in St. Luke’s Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family would like to express their gratitude to the caregivers for providing such excellent care over the past few months. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, www.alz.org, the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, www.smithfieldvfd.com or the Isle of Wight Volunteer Rescue Squad, www.iwvrs.com.
