John Johnston Obituary

John Johnston

March 12, 1941 - December 23, 2025

Beaufort, South Carolina - John William Johnston, known to most as Bill, passed away peacefully on December 23, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of leadership, mentorship, and kindness that touched generations of students, colleagues, friends, and family.

Bill was born on March 12, 1941, in Washington, Pennsylvania, in Greene County, to William Quay Johnston and Mary McGlumphy Johnston. He earned his undergraduate degree from Pennsylvania State University, completed his master's degree at Temple University, and was nearing completion of his PhD in Education at Penn State - an institution that remained deeply meaningful to him throughout his life.

Bill devoted his professional career to higher education, beginning as a faculty member before transitioning into administrative leadership focused on student development and success. He served with distinction at Pennsylvania State University, California State University–Los Angeles, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, and concluded his career at Northwestern University in Chicago. Throughout his career, Bill was widely respected for his compassion, mentorship, and unwavering dedication to students, leaving a lasting impact on countless lives.

Bill spent the last 20 years of his life in his dream retirement location of Beaufort, South Carolina, where he formed many meaningful friendships and found a very special companion in Beverly Peutz. Together, they embraced life's adventures and shared a deep appreciation for Faith, travel, friendship, and the beauty of the world around them.

Bill is survived by his son Mark Johnston of Dallas, Texas, and his wife Martha, and their children Natalie (Eduardo) Sam, and Joe; his son Matthew Johnston and his children Mira and Miles; daughter-in-law Debbie Johnston; and his grandchildren Michael and Bailey Johnston. He is also survived by his beloved Beverly Peutz, with whom he shared many joyful years.

He was preceded in death by his first son, Mike Johnston; and by his parents, Quay and Mary Johnston.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026, at the Parish Church at Habersham beginning at 11 a.m.

A wonderfully warm 'gentleman', I met him twice while picking up Delta, Bev's beloved dog. He was gracious and welcoming and under great care with Bev by his side. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him! My prayers go out to Bev and his family.
