John Jones Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hall Funeral Home - Purcellville on Feb. 25, 2026.
John Lake Jones, 83, of Purcellville, VA, passed away peacefully in his home on February 17, 2026.

Born on June 17, 1942, in Steubenville, OH, John grew up in Follansbee, WV. He attended Marshall University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree and fostered a lifelong connection to his alma mater. No matter where his journey took him, John remained a proud West Virginian at heart.

John was a man who never met a stranger. He was known for his smile and endless repertoire of stories. He shared 59 years of marriage with his wife, Mary Paul Jones. Together, they raised three daughters who were the pride of his life. However, his favorite role was arguably that of "Pop-Pop" to his eight grandchildren, whom he adored beyond measure.

John's extended family held a special place in his heart, and he often looked back on the Lake Family reunions at Oglebay Park as some of his fondest memories. The bond he shared with his nieces and cousins remained deep and meaningful even as the years separated them.

John was preceded in death by his parents, David "Bus" and Doris Jones, and his brothers, David Jones and Robert Jones.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Paul Jones; his three daughters, Wendy Lockhart (Michael), Carrie Jones, and Megan O'Brien (Mike); his eight cherished grandchildren: Emily, Adam, Jack, John Michael, Justin, Morgan, Sam, and Tyler; and a host of beloved nieces and cousins.

John was an avid sports fan. When he wasn't with his family or friends, he was likely rooting for the Thundering Herd or the WVU Mountaineers. Please join us to honor a man who loved a good conversation and a great game.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation (t2t.org) or Samaritan's Purse (samaritanspurse.org).
