John J. "Buzzy" Joy, Jr., age 87, of Hanover, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2025.
Born and raised in Weymouth, Buzzy was the beloved son of the late Mary (Coleran) Regan and John J. Joy, Sr. He attended Weymouth Vocational School, where he studied graphic arts before beginning a lifelong career in printing. His passion and dedication eventually led him to open his own print shop-an endeavor built with hard work and heart. When a fire devastated the business he had worked so tirelessly to create, Buzzy's strength and humility were met with an overwhelming response from the community he served. With support from the TriTown Rotary and the generosity of neighbors and friends, Buzzy rebuilt. In recognition of his service and commitment to charitable causes, he was honored with two Paul Harris Fellowships.
At the age of 16, Buzzy met the love of his life, Stella "Betty" (Poland). From that moment on, their lives were intertwined. They were married on October 12, 1957, and shared an extraordinary 68 years of marriage-marked by deep love, loyalty, and an unwavering bond. Together, they built a home in Hanover and raised a close-knit and loving family.
Buzzy was a generous, kind-hearted man who believed in helping others and finding joy in the everyday. He loved tinkering with small engine repairs in his garage, working in the yard, and simply spending time with his family-the center of his world.
He was known for his legendary annual Christmas Eve party - a beloved tradition that brought together over 80 guests for more than 35 years. He took great pride in preparing food for his friends and family, whether it was his signature flank steak or a perfectly grilled cheeseburger-it was one of the many ways he expressed his love. Above all, Buzzy cherished time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He leaves them all with lasting memories of his silly humor and playfulness. "Papa" always loved to pass the ball back and forth in the yard, venture out to "the pit" for four-wheeler rides, or simply make up a silly song or game to get a laugh.
He was the cherished husband of Betty Joy and loving father of Donna Bartholomew and her husband Marty of Hanover, Rita Joy and her fiancé Gary Sassu of Plainville, CT, David Joy and his wife Sharon of South Weymouth, Michael Joy and his wife Jill of Hanover, and the late Danny Joy. He was a proud grandfather of 12 and great-grandfather of 13. Buzzy is also survived by his dear siblings: George Joy and his wife Margaret of Weymouth, Rita Joy of Quincy, and Russell "Mickey" Regan and his wife Barbara of West Bridgewater.
Buzzy's legacy of love, humility, and resilience lives on through the many lives he touched. His memory will be forever cherished.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, June 19th from 4:00PM to 7:00PM at Sullivan Funeral Home, 551 Washington Street (Rt. 53), Hanover. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 20th at 9:00AM at Our Lady of the Angels Parish (St. Mary's Church), 392 Hanover Street, Hanover. Burial will be held privately.
