John Michael Kapral Jr.

John Michael Kapral, age 78, of South Corning, New York, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 21, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on October 8, 1946, in Bath, New York, the son of John and Jennie (Poplaski) Kapral. John graduated from Bradford Central School in 1964 and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy from 1966 to 1970. After his military service, he earned a bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Georgia Southern University in 1977.

On December 18, 1981, John married the love of his life, Diane Knowles. Together they built a beautiful life, filled with love, and laughter. They often said how lucky they were to have found "their person" to share life's journey.

John worked as a Research and Development Engineer at Hilliard Corporation in Elmira, where he dedicated 28 years before retiring in 2015. He was known for his quiet demeanor, dry sense of humor, and welcoming spirit.

He was an avid woodworker and gardener, finding peace and joy in his craft and the outdoors. His handcrafted pieces have become treasured family heirlooms, leaving behind a tangible legacy of love and creativity. John was also a devoted animal lover and was especially fond of his grand-dog, Bacon.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane Kapral; his three children, Jodie (Chris) Zerega of Sarasota, FL, Brandon Michael (Elizabeth) of Buffalo, and Brenton Michael (Summer Naugle) Kapral of Rochester; his mother, Jennie Kapral of Campbell; four grandchildren, Caroline, Will, Eliza, and Max; his sisters, Barbara Campbell of Savona and Connie Feehan of Corning; his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Donnie and Cheryl, Dana and Marj, Denise and David, and Denise; as well as many nieces and nephews, special family friend Steve Lovell, and numerous other friends.

The family will hold a private Celebration of Life to honor John's memory. Phillips Funeral Home in Corning has been entrusted with his final arrangements.
