Obituary published on Legacy.com by Johnson-Hughes Funeral Home - Herrin on Jan. 19, 2026.
John Paul Kerley, age 69, of Herrin, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 15, 2026 at his home in Herrin, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born Thursday, March 29, 1956 in Carbondale, the son of Ben Lavern and Mary Ann Deloris (Cappellano) Kerley. He married the love of his life, Melody Renee Staton in Johnston City on June 26, 1976. Together, they have shared 49 years of marriage and precious memories.
John, a true original and free spirit, leaves behind a legacy of living life on his own terms. A passionate racing fan and Nascar enthusiast, John loved the thrill of speed and the great outdoors. He was a master gardener and a devoted animal lover, with a special place in his heart for his beloved dogs. John's interests were as varied as they were intense - hotrods, machinery, music, hunting, and guns. But above all, he loved spending time with his family and friends, living life to the fullest, and making memories that would last a lifetime. A faithful member of Heritage Fellowship Church in Johnston City, John was a brother to many, and his love and energy touched countless lives. He was a man who was never afraid to take risks or face consequences, and who inspired others to do the same. John lived life with no regrets - a philosophy that served him well, from racing fast cars to riding ATVs with reckless abandon. John's memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him, and in the beauty of the plants he nurtured, the animals he loved, and the wild, wonderful life he lived.
He is survived by his wife- Melody Renee (Staton) Kerley of Herrin; daughter- Autumn (J.R.) Dilbeck of Hartselle, Alabama; daughter- Brooke (Garrett) Hastings of Herrin; grandchildren- Reece Dilbeck, Riley Dilbeck, Carter Banks, Camden Banks, Harper Hastings; his beloved dog- Goldie; and numerous special friends he considered family.
