John David LaMascus, 67, of Murrieta, California passed away peacefully on July 7, 2025 in his home of 35 years. A graveside funeral will take place at Laurel Cemetery in Murrieta on August 15, 2025 at 10am.

Born at Naval Hospital Pensacola Florida on October 4, 1957 (earning him the nickname Sputnik), he was the first son of John Foster LaMascus and Virginia Lee LaMascus.

John attended Rowland Elementary, Barranca Elementary, Sierra Vista Junior High, and South Hills High School, where he was a thespian with roles including the lead in The Crucible. He was also a dedicated Scout, earning the Arrow of Light and Eagle Scout with Troop 443.

He attended Cal State Fullerton from 1975-77 where he majored in Telecommunications, followed by graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from University of Redlands 1981-83.

He spent over 30 years working in Pharmaceuticals and Quality Assurance where he was known for his dedication, mentorship, and kindness to his peers.

Community service and charitable giving were pillars of his character. He was a faithful member of Oak Springs Community Church for over two decades leading worship on Sundays and serving on the board of governance and as a Deacon, then Elder.

John loved being in the great outdoors, whether fishing or hiking, and was a lifetime member of the NRA. He had an affinity for flowers, art, sci-fi, and the bass guitar.

John was preceded in death by both his parents and Patricia, his wife of nearly 40 years, and is survived by daughters Stacy Unzicker and Jaime Baalbergen and grandsons Benny and Niko. He also leaves behind his uncle Bob Boies, and brothers Drew LaMascus and Steve LaMascus. John will be remembered for his intelligence, enthusiasm, humor, wisdom, and authenticity.

Yesterday

I am so sorry to hear that Dave passed away. I was the LaMascus's neighbor from 6-8th grade. (I lived below their home on Covina Hills Rd.) I am doing SHHS Class of '75 50th Reunion and was hoping he would come until I learned of his passing. My condolences to his family. He will be missed.
