John Foster Lance III

Russell, Kansas - John Foster Lance, III, 74, died on Monday, July 21, 2025, at the Russell Regional Hospital Emergency Room in Russell, Kansas.

John was born on November 25, 1950, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of John Foster, Jr. and Ruth C. (Hinkle) Lance. He grew up in Wichita and graduated from East High School in Wichita. Later he attended Wichita State University and received his degree from McPherson College. He met Sheryl Janice Matz, and they eloped to Las Vegas and were united in marriage on June 02, 1986. From this union John and Sheryl raised two children, stepson Dustin and daughter Darcy and they made their home in the Newton, Kansas area. John worked as a bookkeeper at several different jobs over the years, most notably he worked for Wickham Glass in Wichita for many years. John and Sheryl are longtime members of the Grace Community Church in Newton, Kansas. John enjoyed watching sports like his beloved Boston Red Sox baseball team and also enjoyed watching the Kansas City Chiefs football and Kansas City Royals baseball.

Surviving family include his wife Sheryl of the home, stepson Dustin Hanes and wife Britney of Haxtun, Colorado; daughter Darcy McNeal and husband Morgan of Paradise, Kansas; sisters Linda Greenberg of Kansas City, Kansas and Jane Taylor and husband Jim of Wichita, Kansas and grandchildren Austin and Mallory Hanes and Emma, Bree, Levi and Lane McNeal. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Cremation was selected by the family, and they will have a private scattering of the ashes at a later time and date. Pohlman-Varner-Peeler Mortuary of Russell, Kansas, is in charge of the cremation services.
