John Langley Obituary

John Miller Langley, 90, resident of McCormick, widower of Barbara Maddox Langley, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2025, at Hospice & Palliative Care of the Piedmont.

Born June 5, 1934, in McCormick, SC, he was a son of the late Dewey Hobson Langley, Sr. and Mary Alexandria Browne Langley. He was a 1952 graduate of McCormick High School and was in the South Carolina National Guard. He retired from the water waste treatment plant of the McCormick CPW after 15 years of full-time work, followed by 18 years part-time. He was previously with Milliken Mills from 1952 to 1985. He was a volunteer firefighter for the Troy Fire Department and a founding member of the McCormick County all-volunteer Rescue Squad, having been an EMT for over 20 years.

He was a member of Troy Methodist Church where he was active in all areas of the church, including but not limited to the Sound System, the Handicap Ramp Building Project, and the Warm Project. He was also a member of the Men's Sunday School Class. Having been a member of the church since his birth, he was the oldest member of the church for many years. John was a longtime member of the McCormick School Board during the public school integration.

Surviving are a daughter, Sarah Jane McCracken (Joel) of Spartanburg; a son, David Warren Dowtin of Jacksonville, FL; two sisters, Julia L. Cummings of Irmo and Laura L. Chandler of Saluda; two sisters-in-law, Jean F. Langley of Greenwood and Doris P. Langley of Greenwood; and five grandchildren, Jessica McCracken and Brent McCracken (Ann), Gabriel Dowtin, Johnny Dowtin (Kristen), Ryan Barnes (Jessica).

He was predeceased by three brothers, Edwin "Ed" Langley, Alfred Langley, and Hobson Langley; a sister, Carolyn L. Strom; a son, John Kennedy Dowtin, Sr.; a daughter-in-law, Edicta E. Dowtin; and brothers-in-law, Jimmie P. Strom and Jimmy T. Chandler.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1 PM Saturday at Troy Methodist Church with Rev. Kile Antone officiating.

Burial will be at Troy Cemetery.

The family is at the home in McCormick and will receive friends at the church from 11:30 AM - 1:00 PM on Saturday.
