JOHN S. LLOYD, RETIRED PSYCHOLOGIST AND MEDICAL EDUCATOR

John Sheldon Lloyd of Rocky River, retired psychologist and medical educator, died October 17th, 2025 at Westlake, Ohio at 91 from complications due to a hip injury.

John was born on 03/07/1934 in Cleveland, the son of attorney Sheldon A. and Elizabeth M. Lloyd (nee Dederich Coughanauer), both now deceased. He was raised in Cleveland Heights and graduated from St. Gregory the Great School (1948), Cathedral Latin High School (1952), John Carroll University (1959) and Case Western Reserve University (1966), where he received his doctorate in psychology. John served in the United States Army (1954-1956), from which he was honorably discharged. He spent his entire professional career in medical education. He retired from Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine in 2002.

During his 38-year career, John was a faculty member at the medical schools of the University of Illinois, University of Southern California, and Case Western Reserve University. He became the first Director of Education and Research for the American Board of Medical Specialties in Evanston, IL (1978-1987). His research interests included teaching and learning in medicine, physician interpersonal skills and clinical performance assessment, and health care quality improvement. John was the editor of eight technical books and the author of 24 journal articles/book chapters in his field. He served as a consultant to various medical schools and teaching hospitals, national medical associations, medical specialty societies and certifying boards, and the federal government.

In 1961 John married the former Patricia Louise Bartunek of Garfield Heights, now deceased. They met while both working at WJW in Cleveland when John was found using Pat's typewriter after hours, notably without her permission. They became the proud parents of John P. Lloyd, PhD (Janet Bush Lloyd), of Sierra Madre, CA and Patricia E. A. Fay (Ted Fay) of Evanston, IL, and the grandparents of John R. and Janelle Lloyd of Sierra Madre, and Grace E. Fay of New York City and John P. (Jack) Fay of Evanston. John was the brother of Mary E. Deutschman (nee Lloyd Koster, husband, Dr. Daniel [deceased]) of Bay Village; and the uncle of Michael Koster of New York City and Brian Koster of Lakewood.

Following the death of his first wife, John was reintroduced to a classmate from elementary school, and then married the former Carol Marie Bang (nee Lally) of South Euclid, OH. He thus became the stepfather of Kathleen A. Bondra (nee Bang, husband, Dr. John) of North Ridgeville, OH and Richard P. Bang (wife, Karen) of Wellington, OH; and the step-grandfather of Daniel Licursi of Fremont, Patrick Licursi of Lakewood and Kelly Bondra of North Ridgeville, and step-great-grandfather to Colin (son of Daniel) and Freda (daughter of Patrick).

John then found a kindred spirit and companionship with Yvonne Foye of Rocky River, OH.

John's passions in life were focused on enjoyment of the moment and intellectual pursuits. He loved to laugh, with a deep appreciation of dry and witty humor and the occasionally silly moments. A perfect evening was spent with friends and family, listening to jazz or classical music, having an excellent meal and intelligent conversation, followed by an unneeded desert. Earlier days were accompanied by a dry gin martini, a pipe or a rare cigar. John always loved cars, from restoration work as a teenager to road trips as an adult. He also loved to travel, with beach and city destinations as favorites. Those who spent any time with John were aware of his kind and gentle nature, which he fully embodied in his role as a husband, father, grandfather and friend.

A celebration of life will be hosted by the family at a later date. Contributions in John's honor may be made to the American Civil Liberties Union (https://action.aclu.org/give/make-gift-aclu-someones-memory) or your local PBS station (https://pbs.org/donate).
