John Makris Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Evans Funeral Chapel & Cremation Services - Parkville on Jan. 16, 2026.
John Makris, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully at his home in Parkville, Maryland, on January 16, 2026, at the age of 92. He was born on April 10, 1933, on the island of Samos, Greece, where his lifelong love of music and craftsmanship first began.

From a young age, John displayed remarkable musical talent, beginning as a boy playing the accordion and keyboard. Music remained at the center of his life. He created his own music, played in bands, and shared his extraordinary gift with everyone around him. His talent was so profound that he was able to make a living through music, touching countless lives with joy and spirit. To those who knew him, his music was not just something he played-it was something he gave.

In addition to his musical gifts, John was an exceptionally skilled tailor, known for his sewing talent, precision, and dedication to his work. He took great pride in honest labor and craftsmanship, always working hard to provide for his family.

After immigrating from Samos to Canada, and later to the United States, John spent most of his life building a future rooted in perseverance, sacrifice, and love. A man of deep faith, he was Greek Orthodox, and his faith guided his life with humility and gratitude.

John was a devoted husband for 52 years to his beloved late wife, Dafni Makris, with whom he shared a loving and enduring marriage and built a family grounded in tradition and strength. For the last 18 years, John was blessed to share a wonderful companionship with Voula Stamos, with whom he traveled, laughed, and lived a joyful life filled with love and friendship. He was deeply loved by Voula and warmly embraced by her family, who treated him with kindness, respect, and genuine affection, enriching his life in countless ways.

He is survived by his children: Despina and Nicholas Sollon, Marika Makris, Alexander and Despina Makris, and Anna and Giuseppe Colandrea. He was a proud grandfather to 12 grandchildren and a loving great-grandfather to 12 great-grandchildren, all of whom were a constant source of joy and pride in his life.

John will be remembered as a good, joyful, talented, and loving man-a man whose music lifted hearts, whose hands created with care, and whose life was devoted to his family. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched, the music he left behind, and the love he gave so freely.

Family and friends will honor and celebrate John's life at the family-owned Evans Life Celebration Home, 8800 Harford Road, Parkville MD on Monday, January 19, 2026 from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. where a Trisaghion Service will be held at 4 p.m. An additional visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2504 Cub Hill Road, Parkville, MD from 10am-10:30am, with a service to follow at 10:30am. Interment to conclude all services at St. Demetrios Cemetery.

May his memory be eternal.
