John Martin Sommers Sr., 80, of Burlington, died at 1:25 AM Saturday, December 11, 2021, at the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House in West Burlington.
Born March 10, 1941, in Fort Madison, IA, he was the son of Jerry and Maggie Herrin Sommers. On January 30, 1965, he married Mary E. Gilpin in Keokuk, Iowa.
He was a graduate of Fort Madison High School.
He was a U.S. Army Veteran, stationed in Korea.
After the Army, he worked for Midwest Wax paper. He later worked for Georgia Pacific, later known as Simpson Paper, where he worked his way up to Plant manager and retired after many years. After his retirement, he decided to work at the Mt. Pleasant warehouse with his friend Swede.
John enjoyed watching westerns and going to Bee's games. He liked baseball, especially the Dodgers baseball team. He liked to go to the Eagles and have a drink with his friends Swede and Charlie. He was the Iowa State Marble Champion in 1955.
Survivors include his wife, Mary E. Sommers of Burlington; three children, Coy (Linny) Miller of Dallas City, IL, John Sommers, Jr. of Burlington, Jamie (Kerri) Sommers of Burlington; six grandchildren, Sara (Logan) Ealey, Seth (Emma) Miller, Kaslyn (Alex) Breuer, Austinn (Jennae) Schaefer, Karli Schaefer, Caleb (Donata) Reynolds, six great-grandchildren, Lelan and Ridge Ealey, Natalie Parcel, Paisley and Cole Breuer, Asher Schaefer; and John's sister, Janice Peterschimdt of Fort Madison.
He was preceded in death by his parents, twin daughters, Tamela and Pamela, four brothers and two sisters.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
A memorial has been established for the Burlington Bee's.
