John Martinez Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hanley Funeral Home, Inc. - Staten Island on May 20, 2025.
John F. Martinez, 88 of Staten Island, NY, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025, at RUMC.
Born in Brooklyn, New York on May 12, 1937, to Joseph M. Martinez and Helen (nee Balsamo), he was predeceased by his high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 50 years Johanna (nee Chillemi). He was a loving father to Helen Deliso (Jerry), Joseph (Lynn), Theresa Mistretta, and John (Lori). He was a proud Grandfather to 10 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
As a young boy, John was a member of the renowned Police Athletic League Drum and Bugle Corp. He travelled up and down the eastern seaboard to perform at parades and special events. Later, he served in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was a 3rd degree knight with the Knights of Columbus council 1073 in Brooklyn N.Y. He was a member of the International Longshoreman's Association as a Longshoreman, and later, a Checker.
In 1980 John organized the "National Yellow Ribbon Campaign". He, along with family, friends and supporters, held a ceremony to tie yellow ribbons on the trees in Battery Park and the S.I Ferry to bring attention to the American hostages being held in Iran. His campaign made headlines in the newspapers, television and radio news stations. He was a published author, using the penname John Balsamo.
John had many interests and hobbies which helped define who he was. He was a stained-glass artist; he was a screen-print artist and a cartoonist. He created a replica of the Brooklyn Bridge using only varieties of pasta as his medium. He enjoyed crabbing, fishing, antiquing, trips to the casino and estate sales. He was a huge Yankee fan. He never missed watching a game. He loved watching old movies, especially Westerns. John Wayne was a favorite. He was a great storyteller, and he always had a good joke to share. He also enjoyed a glass of cognac with a fine cigar. Most of all, he loved his family and the times we were together. He will be greatly missed.
His wake will be Wednesday May 21st 4pm - 8pm
A Funeral mass will be held the following day Thursday at 10:15am at Sacred Heart / St. Stephens Church in Brooklyn followed by a burial at Greenwood cemetery.
