John J. Martzen, Jr., 92, of Waymart, died peacefully on Friday morning, November 14, 2025 at The Vero at Bethlehem Personal Care Center in Bethlehem, PA. His wife of 68 years, the former Helen R. Medalis survives him. They were married on July 27, 1957 at St. Thomas More Church in Lake Ariel.
Born October 14, 1933, in Waymart, he was the son of the late John J. Martzen, Sr. and Virginia (Stachura) Martzen.
A lifelong resident of Waymart, John was a graduate of Waymart High School and a member of St. Mary's Church and the Holy Name Society.
John was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He served during the Korean War from 1953-1955. Following his honorable discharge from active duty, John later served in the National Guard and helped with various veteran and military organizations.
John was actively involved in supporting and volunteering in the Waymart community; he dearly loved Waymart and was proud of his town. He was instrumental in building and establishing Wayside Park. John was also an active member and officer of the Waymart American Legion Post 889 for more than 53 years. His hobbies included woodworking, golf, and bowling.
A rural mail carrier for many years, John delivered mail for RD1 Waymart. Upon his retirement, he was commended for safety, having never had an accident during his career.
Above all, John was a family man. He loved his wife and children dearly. John and Helen met at a polka dance, and John enjoyed polka music and dances throughout his life. He will be remembered fondly by everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is also survived by four children: Thomas Martzen of North Carolina, Eileen Joyce of Eynon, Diane Molewski of Bethlehem, and William Martzen of Washington State; several grandchildren; and great-grandchildren.
John was also preceded in death by a sister, Mary Ann Gerlits; and a brother, Robert Martzen.
A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, November 20, 2025 at 12:00 Noon in St. Mary's Church, 242 Carbondale Road, Waymart, with Rev. Joseph Sitko and Deacon Edward Kelly officiating.
There will be a visitation on Thursday from 11:30 AM until Noon in the church.
Interment will be in The Waymart Cemetery at Canaan Corners with military honors on Thursday.
