John Deitrich Mason

John Deitrich Mason of Winchester, VA passed away suddenly Saturday, June 21, 2025, at the home of his parents.
John was born in Winchester, VA on August 25, 1973, to William Harold and Ellen Elizabeth Mason (Pugh).
John enriched our lives with his humor, his smiles, his compassion and love for others. His love of animals was immense. He always checked up on other's pets and in that he found his conversation starter.
John attended Grafton School, Winchester Public Schools and completed his education at Benedictine School in Ridgley, MD.
Moving back to Winchester after the completion of his formal education, he began working at Northwestern Workshop (NW Works). Striving for his independence, his first group home was with Shenandoah Valley Community Residences. Over the years, he shared his life with several other group home programs.
John participated in Virginia Special Olympics and was selected to attend the first international Special Olympics Summer games in Dublin, Ireland in 2003. He medaled in skills Roller Skating. He participated in local Special Olympics bowling, bocce, basketball, and track and field for many years. John performed with the Very Special Chimers in music therapy through Shenandoah University for 15 years, including a special performance at the White House.
John loved spending time with his late grandparents, Lewis and Eloise Pugh of Romney, WV, camping with his dad, vacationing at the beach with family, attending church, listening to music at church, bluegrass concerts, and taking Sunday afternoon drives with his parents. He loved being out in the community socializing with family and friends. John never knew a stranger.
John is survived by his parents, William (Pat) and Ellen Mason (Pugh), his niece, Londynn Krygier, his special sister-in-law, Tina Jacobin of Winchester, VA and her daughter, Evelina Baldwin; his special aunt, Jane Hamilton; his cousins Sara Blum, Joe Mason, Marianne Saville, Lt. Col. Ian Saville and many more extended family. He is also survived by his four – legged buddy, Kirbi.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Willim Mason II, his grandparents, JG and Marguerite Mason and Lewis and Eloise Pugh.
