John Jesse Mayes

John Jesse Mayes, 96, of Ashton, WV, went to join his Heavenly Father on February 27, 2026. He was born on April 25, 1929, to parents John and Jesse Booth Mayes, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 75 years, Barbara Ann Gillispie Mayes. Together they had one child, John Michael Mayes, whom they lost in an accident in 1967.

Johnny loved the Lord and was a member of Moore's Chapel Church where he was the choir leader. He would often be found volunteering and serving his church family however he was needed. He was employed and retired from Houdaille Industries in Huntington, WV. He spent much of his retirement years pursuing his favorite hobby of woodworking and was known to craft beautiful keepsakes for family and friends. He was an avid jigsaw puzzle enthusiast and would often frame his work to give as gifts or display in his home. Johnny was blessed to have so many nieces and nephews that were devoted to helping however they could, especially in the later years in life.

Johnny is also survived by his sister-in-law Judy Felty and Sharon Dixon, brothers-in-law Carl and Debbie Gillispie and Ralph Workman. Other loved ones going before him were brothers and sisters. Homer, Ray, Harlan, Marie Deal, Betty Brown, Juanita Stark, and Genevieve Mayes, brothers and sisters-in-law James and Mozell Dabney, Charles and Rose Withers, Ralph and Janice Watterson Lang, Don and Esther Gillispie, Joan Spurlock Workman, Don Felty, and Rusty Dixon.

Funeral Services will be held at Deal Funeral Home, Point Pleasant, WV at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, with Ronnie Long officiating the service. Visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the service. Burial will follow at Beale Cemetery, Apple Grove, WV.
