John G. McCabe Sr., 85, of
Pompano Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on Saturday in Red Bank, surrounded by the love and presence of his children.
John was born in the Bronx and spent his early years there before his family settled in West Keansburg, New Jersey. He was educated at St. Ann's Catholic School and Red Bank Catholic High School, institutions that helped shape his strong faith and character. He later answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army, where he was stationed in Germany and served honorably as a Military Police Officer from 1957 to 1960.
Following his military service, John dedicated his working life to serving others. He worked as a painter, then as a bus driver for NJ Transit, before returning to his true calling in law enforcement. He was among the original full-time police officers in Raritan Township, now Hazlet Township, where he proudly served the community for many years. Through dedication and integrity, he rose through the ranks and retired in 1987 as Detective Lieutenant.
In November of 1960, John married the love of his life, Bernadette, and together they built a beautiful life and raised their family in Hazlet. After retiring, they moved to
Pompano Beach, Florida, where they cherished time together boating and fishing. John continued to serve well into retirement as a Contract Court Security Officer with the U.S. Marshal Service for 18 years. In 2012, he retired once more, this time to lovingly care for his beloved wife during her illness-a role he embraced with devotion and grace.
John was predeceased by his cherished wife, Bernadette, and his brother, Jerry.
He leaves behind his loving children, John McCabe and his wife Joanne, and Joanie McCabe and her husband James Smith; his adored grandchildren, Kristina and her husband Clayton, Sean, John, and Gabrielle; his treasured great-grandchildren, Colton and Caden; and his dear sister, Johanna Conlon. John's legacy of service, love, and faith lives on through them all.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 1st, from 3:00 to 6:00 PM at Holmdel Funeral Home, 26 S. Holmdel Road,
