Dr. John Dorland McConnell, known by many as JD, played his final game on June 1, 2025.

Born on May 10, 1944, in Fayetteville, Arkansas, he was the younger son of Marjorie and George Lloyd McConnell Sr., both now deceased, as is his older brother, George McConnell Jr. JD grew up in Fayetteville, where his mother taught art in the public schools and his father was an attorney and served for many years as a respected elected official in Washington County.

A standout athlete from a young age, JD became an outstanding basketball player at Fayetteville High School and was a four-year letterman with the University of Arkansas Razorbacks. He was twice named to the Southwest Conference All-Academic Team and recognized in Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities during his senior year. Though he often joked that he was born a few decades too early to benefit from today's NIL deals, he took pride in being part of an era when "student-athlete" still meant something.

Following his time on the court, JD pursued a medical degree at the University of Arkansas School of Medicine in Little Rock, enrolling in 1966. During those years, he was rumored —by at least some—to be the most handsome man on campus. But one woman, Angela, stood out to him above all others. She became his partner in life for over 45 years and they were cornerstones of the family they built together, and which thrives today.

JD developed a respected pathology practice, serving hospitals across Arkansas until his retirement in 1998. Retiring early gave him the freedom to become his children's biggest fan, faithfully attending their high school and college athletic events across the country. He brought the same devotion and competitive spirit to his leisure pursuits—golf, tennis, fly fishing, and nearly running a marathon.

He is survived by his beloved wife Angela; his children John (Ashley), Jamie Turpin (Nick), and Stephanie Crainer (Brandon); and his grandchildren Tripp McConnell, Mary Jane Hasz (Luke), and Pierce and Lochlan Crainer. He also leaves behind many dear friends and colleagues—some of whom, rumor has it, still owe him money from bets lost on the tennis court or golf course. True to form, JD never minded collecting; the joy was in the game and the company. A celebration of JD’s life will be held on July 19. Please contact a family member for details.
