John was born in Alpena on November 6, 1950, to the late John and Ethelen (Blackwell) McConnell. John worked for the City of Alpena's DPW and later was its director. John enjoyed walking, biking, spending time at the library and researching shipwrecks.
Surviving are 3 siblings, Michael (MaryAnn) McConnell, Glenn (Denise) McConnell, Sally Decker; several nieces and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his sister, Diane Evans.
Cremation arrangements have been handled by the Bannan Funeral Home. A private graveside will take place at the Sanborn Township Cemetery.
