John Chambers McCune, Jr. of Hawkinsville passed away at his home on April 10, 2023.
Known to his family and friends as "Johnny" or "Pop," he was born on July 3, 1936, in
Birmingham, Alabama.
Johnny was a graduate from West Point High School located in West Point, Georgia, where he
participated in varsity football and numerous other extracurricular activities. He graduated from
the University of Georgia with a degree in political science in 1958. Johnny was a member of
the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. Upon graduation he went into business in Knoxville, Tennessee
and Alexandria, Virginia, and he later retired in Hawkinsville, Georgia.
Before retiring in Hawkinsville, Johnny was a member of First Baptist Church of Alexandria for
over forty years and where he served as a member of the board of deacons. He was an active
member of the Alexandria Rotary Club where he served as club treasurer for forty years. Upon
moving to Hawkinsville, Johnny became an active member of and member of the choir at First
Methodist Church. Johnny was also a member of the Hawkinsville Rotary Club where he served
as President. Johnny had a passion for politics, and he was very involved with the Republican
Party both in Alexandria and in Hawkinsville. Johnny was a master gardener, an avid golfer
(having two hole-in-ones during his lifetime), and an accomplished bass fisherman and
gentleman tree farmer.
Johnny is preceded in death by his parents John and Caroline McCune and is survived by his
wife of 38 years, Rena Lawson McCune of Hawkinsville, a son: John C. McCune, III of Palm
Beach, Florida, a step-son Ivy Stewart Duggan, Jr. and his wife, Kendall, of Rome, Georgia, a
step-daughter Barbara Duggan Henry and her husband, Mike, of Newnan, Georgia, his brother
Ralph McCune and his wife, Jan, of Dallas, Texas, and three first-cousins: Bill Tucker of
Daphne, Alabama, Robert Tucker, III of Birmingham, Alabama, and James H. McCune, III of Memphis, Tennessee. Johnny is also survived by nine grandchildren: Rebecca Stewart Henry, James Michael Henry and his wife Courtney, Rena Elizabeth Henry, Ivy Stewart Duggan, III and his wife Marissa, Chandler Hardin Duggan, Hugh Lawson Duggan, Barbara Grace Duggan, Noah Lanier Duggan, and Levi Maddux Duggan. He also had one great-grandson, Michael Witten Henry.
Memorial services will be held at 2pm on Thursday, April 13, 2023 at Hawkinsville First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jack Varnell officiating. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Hawkinsville First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 434, Hawkinsville, Georgia 31036 or The Methodist Home for Children & Youth, P.O. Box 2525, Macon, Georgia 31204.
