John McKay Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Pittsburgh Cremation & Funeral Care - Robinson Township on Feb. 17, 2026.
Jack McKay, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, educator, mentor, and friend, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2026, at the age of 88. Jack was the devoted husband of his late wife, Sue. During their 51 years of marriage, their love was enduring, joyful, and full of adventure, especially during their treasured trips to Aruba. We find comfort in knowing that he is now "at Kevin's," reunited with his beloved Sue after 12 long years apart.

Jack was born on March 17, 1937, in Van Lear, Kentucky, to John A. McKay and Bertha Bradley McKay. He was preceded in death by his infant brother, Edward. His family was his greatest joy, and meant everything to him. He and his sisters were known as the "Fab Four". He frequently traveled halfway across the state to have lunch and spend a couple of hours with his siblings-Betty Ann & Bud, Grace, Jayne & Andy.

He always made sure that all of the children in his life-his kids, nieces, nephews, grand children, and great-grand children-had joyful experiences, especially during difficult times in their lives. With that smile of his on his face and a sparkle in his blue eyes, he was genuinely happy when spending time with them and making them laugh; even if it meant tiring himself out from pushing them around on the go-cart, built by his brother-in-law Sheen, when the engine conked out. He was a loving father to his children, Laura & Gerry and Jeff & Ray. He took special pride in his great-grandchildren-his sweetheart Bella, CJ, Zane, and Xander-who brought him endless happiness and smiles. Known affectionately as Grandpa Jack.

He had a kindness that even Mr. Rogers would admire, he lived a life defined by love, gentleness, patience, integrity, being endlessly thoughtful, with a deep commitment to family, friends, and community. To quote a family friend and former student, "Jack is a perfect example of who we all should be … Pure, Genuine, Kind, and treats everyone the same. We all were important and he made us feel loved". His gentle humor, steady presence, and generous spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him. He was loved not only by family and friends, but also by former students, colleagues, athletes, and the many store and restaurant employees who came to know him through his friendly conversations and kind spirit.

In 1947 his family moved to California, Pennsylvania, where he built a lifelong legacy. He graduated from California Area High School in 1955, earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from California State College in 1959, and received his Master's degree in Education from West Virginia University in 1964. Jack proudly served as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves, carrying forward a lifelong sense of service and responsibility.

Early in his childhood, Jack established his close relationship with God at his Van Lear Baptist church. Multiple days a week, with Bible in hand, he was the first one through the doors when they opened. His cousin believed that he was destined to become a preacher, however God called him to be a teacher. After being a school bus driver in the Mon Valley, he started his teaching career in 1960 at California Community High School. Beginning in 1964, Jack taught social studies and history in the Bethel Park School District, becoming a beloved figure to generations of students. He was known for teaching the students who needed him most-the "troubled kids" who adored him and thrived under his patience, humor, and unwavering belief in their potential. His classroom was a place of understanding, encouragement, and second chances. Beyond the classroom, Jack coached basketball and tennis, instilling teamwork and confidence in countless young athletes.

A lifelong sports fan, Jack's heart belonged to the University of Kentucky Wildcats. A passionate basketball scout and talent recruiter, he had an extraordinary eye for young athletes and played a role in guiding talent to collegiate programs-especially Kentucky. He maintained close relationships with legendary coaches Adolph Rupp, Joe Hall, Rick Pitino, and John Calipari, who valued his insight and expertise. Coaches and potential recruits alike were welcomed into the McKay home for one of Sue's famous dinners, conversation, and mentorship-turning their dining room table into a hub of basketball history. He was a renowned journalist for Street & Smith Magazine from 1972 to 1979, where his knowledge of basketball and sports history earned him national respect. He was also a proud Pittsburgh sports fan, sharing his love for the city's teams with family and friends and celebrating every victory with childlike joy.

Jack's legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched-as a father, grandfather, teacher, coach, mentor, writer, scout, and friend. He will be deeply missed, but his love, lessons, and laughter will remain with us forever. He truly lived a legendary and beloved life.

Visitation will begin at 1:15 pm on Sunday March 01, 2026 at Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Road, Bethel Park, PA 15102, followed by a Christian Memorial Service at 2:00 pm.
