John Griffith "Johnny" McKowen passed away peacefully into eternity on Tuesday, August 5, 2025. He was born on August 30, 1934 to Alex and Henrietta McKowen and lived near Lindsey, Louisiana. He was 90 years old. After graduating from Zachary High School, he attended Copiah-Lincoln in Wesson Ms. Following college, Johnny returned home to join his father and brother in the family farming and cattle business. The farm ultimately became T-) Ranch which he owned and operated for 47 years until he retired in 2005. During that time, he was a long standing member of the Board for Feliciana Farm Bureau and Cattleman's Association. In his "free" time, he enjoyed deer and turkey hunting along with fishing with his buddy Charles Hughes. In his younger years, he was on the rodeo circuit participating in calf roping and steer wrestling. Johnny was a member of the Plains Presbyterian Church for his entire life and served as a Deacon for 53 years until his appointment as Deacon Emeritus in 2013. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marilyn Messer McKowen. Sons, John Griffith "Grif" McKowen, Jr. (Erin), and Michael McKowen (Andrew). Granddaughters, Lauren McKowen Bourgeois (Luke), Lindsay McKowen Travis (Kemp) and Kathryn Elizabeth McKowen (Jacob). Great Grandchildren, Lainey Grace Bourgeois and John Kemp Travis. Johnny is preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Henrietta McKowen, Sr., brothers, Alex McKowen, Jr. and wife, Gertrude Townsend McKowen and Henry G. McKowen and wife, Shirley McKowen. Sisters, Beryl "Boots" McKowen Morris and husband, Dr. Harry S. Morris and Pearl McKowen Slaughter and her husband, Mansel Slaughter. Visitation will be at Charlet Funeral Home in Zachary on Thursday, Aug. 7, 2025 from 6pm until 8pm. Visitation continues on Friday, Aug. 8, 2025 at Plains Presbyterian Church from 9am until service at 11am conducted by Rev. Campbell Silman. Burial will be in Young Family Cemetery, Zachary.
