Jack McNichol passed on peacefully on July 1, 2024 at the age of 87. He went to join his wife of 62 years, Eileen, who left us just 72 days earlier. John Andrew McNichol was born on May 9th, 1937, in Queens, New York. He grew up on Long Island and was educated at Chaminade High School, St. John’s University, and New York Law School. In 1960 he met a young girl from Ireland named Eileen Sweeney and they were married in 1962. They started a family and moved to the suburban town of Huntington Long Island, where they raised their 2 children. Jack spent most of his career as an attorney for the State of New York, in various positions from the early Sixties to the late Nineties. After retiring from the state in 1999 Jack and Eileen moved to Pittsburgh to be near their children and grandchildren, who called him “Poppy”. Spending the last 25 years of their lives in the borough of Mt. Lebanon Pennsylvania, they made many great friends, particularly among the neighbors on their street, with whom they became very close. Jack enjoyed his retirement, attending all of his grandchildren’s many school and sporting events and hosting his family every Sunday for dinner, after which he usually enjoyed a snifter of good brandy (or a vodka tonic if it was summertime). Jack was an avid sports fan, particularly of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pirates, but especially of his favorite, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team. He enjoyed old Western movies and TV shows, particularly of the black and white variety. Mostly though, was an avid reader and lover of books, particularly about US history. He possessed an encyclopedic knowledge of the American Revolution, the Civil War and World Wars I&II. He will be dearly missed by his children, Dan (Roseann) McNichol and Allison (Huw) Carey as well as his grandchildren, Ryan McNichol, Timothy (Kirsten) McNichol, Meaghan McNichol, Lauren Carey, Amelia Carey; his great grandson, Jack McNichol; his brother, Dan McNichol; his cousins; his nieces and nephews; and his many friends and neighbors in Mt. Lebanon. But we are comforted by the knowledge that he is at peace now that he has been reunited with his beloved Eileen. Rest easy Poppy. Family and friends welcome Saturday, July 6, 2024 from 3-7 pm, WILLIAM SLATER II FUNERAL SERVICE, 1650 Greentree Rd., Scott Twp. 15220, (412-563-2800), where a blessing service will be held Saturday at 7:00 pm.
