After graduating high school at the age of 15 (yes, 15!), John left the island of Puerto Rico in 1947 with his mother to find a better life in Brooklyn. His dream of becoming an engineer was put on hold, and he searched for a new job. While practicing interviews, he came across a job opening with First National Bank; taking that chance led to a distinguished career that spanned nearly 4 decades! Starting as a bank teller his combination of smarts, personality, drive and people skills moved him up the ranks to become the first Hispanic vice president in the Citi Bank's history.
He was part of the original Latin jazz scene in the late 50's, and that is where he met the love of his life, Marge. She was the perfect match for him, and together they created an amazing life, which they shared successes with surrounding family. They eventually left NY for a retirement life in sunny AZ. His love of family and his generosity is a legacy that all can be proud of; his good karma was rewarded.
He was predeceased by Gertrudis Guteres (mother), Tomas Mercado (father), and Margarita Mercado (wife). He is survived by his sons; Thomas (wife Trisha), Daniel (wife Kelli). and Dave. As well as his four grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Reunited with Marge in heaven, he is truly happy again.
