John Henry Meridith, a man of unwavering strength and adventurous spirit, passed away on October 22, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on August 4, 1949, in Highland Park, Michigan, to Charles and Barbara Meridith, John's journey through life was marked by his passion for the outdoors, his love for his family, and his tenacious battle against life's challenges.
John's early life was shaped by his service to his country when he was drafted into the U.S. Army at the young age of 18. His time in the military instilled in him a strong sense of duty and moral conviction that he carried with him throughout his life. After his service, John transitioned to a career as an engineer for the railroad, where he dedicated many years of hard work and expertise.
Throughout his life, John faced cancer not once but twice, demonstrating remarkable resilience and strength. His fighting spirit was an inspiration to all who knew him, and he remained a beacon of hope and courage even during his toughest battles.
John's family was the cornerstone of his life. He was a loving father to John Henry Meridith Jr., Barbara Meridith-Tucker, Shannon Meridith and son-in-law Milton Harris. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren, Richard, Justin, Juan, Brittany, Jonathan, Jeremiah, Alex, Gwen, and Carl, and his adored great-grandchildren, A.J., Avaya, Jesse, Lylah, Omar, and the late William. John's siblings, the late Linda Carpenter, the late Patsy Evans, Joyce Evans, and the late Kenneth Meridith, shared in the joys and sorrows of his life's journey. His former wife, Elaine, with whom he shared many treasured memories, including a honeymoon in his favorite place, Mexico, remained an important part of his life.
John's zest for life was evident in his many interests and hobbies. A true outdoorsman, he found solace and joy in fishing, hunting, and simply sitting by the water, reveling in nature's beauty. His green thumb was well-known as he grew vegetables to share with his neighbors. John's love for music, particularly classic rock, often led him to local music festivals where he enjoyed the vibrant energy and community.
Even in his later years, John discovered a new passion for golf, embracing the sport with enthusiasm and joy. His adventurous soul took him on many travels, with fond memories of visiting family in Tennessee and his parents. John's daily ritual of playing the lottery, a habit he maintained with determination even from his hospital bed, spoke volumes about his hopeful and steadfast nature.
John Meridith was a man who lived life on his terms, with an intelligent mind and a passionate heart. His stubbornness, often seen as a hallmark of his character, was in truth a testament to his unwavering commitment to his beliefs and desires. He leaves behind a legacy of love, perseverance, and the enduring message that life, no matter the hardships, is a journey worth embarking on with all one's heart.
As we bid farewell to John Henry Meridith, we remember a life lived fully, with every moment embraced and every challenge met with unyielding strength. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, as we hold him dear in our hearts forever.
A memorial will be held on December 6, 2025 from 12pm-5pm at Voran Funeral Home (5900 Allen Rd, Allen Park MI 48101)
Memorial service will be at 3:30PM and visitation will continue until 5pm.
