John S. Metcalf, an esteemed electrician who dedicated over 40 years of his life to Worcester State Hospital, has passed away on August 11, 2023, at Overlook Masonic Home in Charlton.  He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Madelon R. (Nygren) Metcalf, in 2009.

He was born on December 19, 1926, in Auburn, MA son of the late John C. and Myra M.K. (Publicover) Metcalf.

During World War II, John served valiantly in the Navy aboard the aircraft carrier CV21. His military service was both honorable and a testament to his bravery.

Outside of his professional career, John found great joy in numerous hobbies and interests. He was a devoted Mason for over 70 years and actively participated in the activities and rituals of this fraternal organization. Additionally, he had a passion for gardening and often reminisced about his enjoyable vacations in Wells, Maine.  John's dedication to music extended beyond his work as an electrician. He also lent his voice to the church choir, utilizing his talents to inspire and uplift those around him.

John will be fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his loving children: Douglas Metcalf and wife, Elizabeth, of Delray Beach, FLA and Janet L. (Metcalf) Lundsten and husband, Warren, of Worcester.  In addition to his children, John leaves behind cherished grandchildren: Jennifer Lundsten of Worcester; Jeffrey Lundsten and wife, Amber, of Auburn, Daniel Metcalf of Alexandria,Virginia, Mathew Metcalf of Seattle, Washington  and Megan Metcalf of San Diago, California.

John's memory will also be carried on by great-grandchildren Seth, Grace, and Sophie Williams of Worcester as well as Amelia and Sarah Lundsten of Auburn.

John S. Metcalf was predeceased by his brother, Donald D. Metcalf who passed away in 2000; and great-granddaughter Allison Williams in 2003.

The legacy of John's industrious spirit, kind heart, and devotion to family and community will forever inspire those who had the pleasure of his company. His absence will be deeply felt, but his memory will remain a guiding light for those he touched. May he rest in peace.

Family and friends are welcomed to a celebration of John's life with a visiting hour from 9am until 10am at Fay Brothers Life Celebration Home, 1 West Boylston Street, West Boylston on Saturday, August 19th, 2023.  A service will begin at 10am in the funeral home and burial, with military honors, will follow in All Faith's Cemetery, 9 Island Road, Worcester.
