John Robert Metzgar, Lt. Col, US Army, Retired, died on August 11, 2011, in New Kent, VA. John was born in Pittsburgh, PA on March 31, 1949 to the late John H. and Mona J. Metzgar. The family moved to Cleveland, OH when John was 13. John is a graduate of the Class of 1971 of the John Carroll University where he was in the Army ROTC program. John leaves behind his wife of 38 years, Roberta C. Metzgar, his son, John B. Metzgar and his wife, Dorothy, and his grandchildren, John Sebastian and Liam Alexander Metzgar. He is also survived by his sister, Karen Baga and her husband, Louis; and nieces, Kimberly and Stephanie. John’s military career took him and his family on assignments to Germany, England, Virginia, and Texas. He retired from the Army in 1993 after serving twenty-two years, settling in Williamsburg, VA. Then John began his fifteen-year career with the Department of Defense, working at Ft. Eustis, VA. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 14, 2011 from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Rd, Williamsburg. A mass of the Christian burial will be offered on Monday, August 15, at 11 AM at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Roman Catholic Church, 2631 Pocahontas Trail, Quinton, VA 23141. Interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Building Fund or the Colonial Council of the Boy Scouts of America, 11721 Jefferson Ave., Newport News, VA 23606.
