John Minott Obituary

Minott John August 26,1951 - Feb. 21,2025 John Hear Couch unexpectedly passed away on February 21st, 2025. John Minott, 73, was a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, whose life was marked by a passion for history, a deep commitment to his work, and a warm, generous spirit. John was the loving brother of Geoffrey, Joseph, Owen, and Elizabeth. He was a cherished uncle to Christopher and Owen Minott and Lucy McCall. He was the son of Joseph Albert Minott Jr. and Lorraine Lukens Minott, both of whom preceded him in death. Raised in various corners of the world, John spent much of his childhood overseas in Norway, France, and Madagascar, as the son of a U.S. Diplomat. These formative years sparked his lifelong love for history and global cultures. A graduate of Middlesex School in Concord, Massachusetts, John earned his bachelor's degree in history from Stanford University and a master's degree in international studies from the University of Oregon. He worked in the University of Oregon archives between his degrees, further nurturing his passion for history and research. For over 30 years, John dedicated his career to the Masonic Temple on Broad Street, where he brought history to life for countless visitors. As a skilled spokesperson, history buff, and Mason, John's quick wit and sense of humor made him beloved by all who encountered him-whether they were local visitors or international guests. Fluent in French, he took great pride in giving tours in both English and French to dignitaries and tourists from around the world. John's legacy endures through the many lives he touched-his family, friends, and fellow Masons, with whom he shared a deep passion for history and storytelling. His stories left an indelible mark on all who knew him. The heartfelt memories and tributes pouring in from so many are a testament to how his words brought joy and life to everyone around him. A celebration of his life will be held in John's honor on the afternoon of April 5th at the Masonic Temple on Broad Street. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Masonic Temple Library and Museum, 1 North Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19107. 215.988.1929 i n John's memory. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

I hitchhiked with John through France -we were both bilingual Stanford students at school in Tours.

John was my good friend from Stanford and beloved member of Stanford-in-France group XXVII. We lived together and traveled together in the 1970s, and were never out of touch since then. In recent years we zoomed regularly with other college friends. I only just found out, in May, about his passing. I miss him dearly.

Quiet and reserved on the exterior, John roared from within. He will be remembered for his wit and wisdom. His knowledge of our history was on display. What a great story teller. I am sure John is spinning yarn from above.
Farewell my brother.
God speed.

On visits to Philadelphia from England I was glad to have spent time with him on two separate occasions. He held court while I held my breath. A true American gentleman. May he rest in the heavenly peace that is wished upon him by all who shared time in is company.

One of the greatest men I have ever known. He lived in our South Philly neighborhood until a few years ago. We had dinner and drinks with him weekly. Our fraternity will not be the same. Farewell Brother

I knew John at Middlesex. We were the two in our class who already spoke French. I remember him as a calm friend. His comfort with himself at 14 and 15 helped me feel OK. Thank you John, and best wishes to all who knew him.
