Obituary of John L. Mitchum, Sr.
John L. Mitchum, Sr., 75, of Orangeburg, S.C. passed away Sunday, April 7, 2024. John was the husband of Linda Beck Mitchum.
John was born in Sumter, SC., the son of Vannie Mitchum and Lydia Mitchum. He worked at the Department of Transportation Lab for 10 years. He then went to work for the Orangeburg Fire Department, and then the Public Safety Department until he retired. John was an instructor for the South Carolina Fire Academy and was a Fire Safety Inspector. John later went on to work at Hillcrest Golf Course until he retired permanently. John was a good Christian man. He was an avid golf player and loved to work on old cars - Corvettes and Chevelles. He also loved riding his Harley Davidsons. John will be greatly missed.
Survivors include his wife of 46 ½ years, one daughter, Amanda Mitchum, and one son, John L. Mitchum, Jr. (Jay), one sister, Carolyn Lohn (Frank), and two brothers; Paul Mitchum, and Kenneth Mitchum (Hopper). He had one grandson, Addison Mitchum for which he was very proud. He has several nieces and nephews.
John was predeceased by his father, mother, and sister, Wilma Mitchum Jackson.
A Memorial Service will be held Friday, April 12, at 11:00 AM at Thompson Funeral Home, 1012 Whitman Street SE, Orangeburg, SC 29115.
